There is no single number — pressure is a balance between paint viscosity, needle size and the finish you want. This guide gives a starting point for every common job, then explains the three variables that move the dial.

The three variables that change the number
1. Needle / nozzle size
A smaller needle passes less paint, so it needs lower pressure to stay controllable. A 0.2 mm pen at 30 PSI will spit and spider; a 0.5 mm at 10 PSI will stall. Match pressure to the needle, not to habit.
2. Paint viscosity
Thin it to the job. Milky / ink-like for fine lines, single-cream for coverage. Thicker paint needs more PSI — but if you are pushing 35+ PSI just to move the paint, thin it instead; high pressure ruins detail and blows highlights.
3. Compressor delivery, not just the gauge
The gauge shows tank/line pressure, but what matters is stable delivered pressure while the trigger is held. A weak diaphragm pump sags under load and the spray breaks up. Two mistakes we see most
- Too much pressure. Beginners crank PSI to "make it come out" when the real fix is thinning the paint. High PSI spits, orange-peels and blows soft edges.
- Moisture in the line. Compressed air condenses; water in the line spits and ruins finishes. An in-line oil-water separator (or a moisture trap on the compressor) is the cheapest quality upgrade you can make.
Tuning method (30 seconds)
- Set 15 PSI as a baseline for a 0.3 mm pen.
- Spray on scrap; if it spatters, lower PSI or thin the paint.
- If it stalls or blobs, raise PSI 2–3 at a time.
- Lock the setting for that paint + needle and write it on the bottle.
Frequently asked questions
What PSI should I start at for a 0.3 mm airbrush?
Start at about 15 PSI and tune by eye. Fine shading drops to 12–15; coverage rises to 20–25. Needle size and paint thickness move the number more than the "brand" of gun.
Why does my airbrush spit at 30 PSI?
Almost always the paint is too thick for that pressure, or there is water in the line. Thin the paint and add a moisture trap before raising PSI further — more pressure just magnifies the spit.
Do I need a compressor with a tank?
For steady, repeatable pressure a tank or piston compressor helps; diaphragm pumps are fine for light, intermittent hobby use. The key is stable delivered pressure while the trigger is held, not the peak gauge number.
Is higher PSI better for coverage?
Up to a point. Past the paint's sweet spot, more PSI destroys detail and wastes media. Use a larger needle (0.4–0.5 mm) and moderate PSI for coverage rather than maxing out a fine pen.
What PSI for nail art and gradients?
Salon airbrush guns typically run 15–30 PSI; gradients and fine work sit around 15–20, full coverage closer to 25–30. Use only cosmetic-grade, skin-safe colour.
